What to Do When Your Car Won't Start in Mississauga

· Mississauga

You turn the key — or press the start button — and nothing happens, or you hear a rapid clicking. Whether you are in a Square One parking garage or your own driveway in Meadowvale, here is how to work out what is wrong and what to do next.

Listen to what the car is telling you

The sound your car makes is the best clue. Rapid clicking, a slow and weak crank, or a dashboard that dims or flickers almost always means the battery does not have enough charge. Complete silence with no dashboard lights can also be a dead battery, or a loose or corroded terminal.

If the engine cranks at normal speed but never catches, the battery is probably fine. The problem is more likely fuel, ignition or a sensor — and a boost will not help.

Quick checks before you call

  • Make sure the car is in Park (or Neutral for a manual) and your foot is on the brake.
  • Check that the key fob battery is not dead — many cars show a "key not detected" message.
  • Turn off the headlights, heater and radio, then try again.
  • Look for anything left on overnight: dome lights, trunk light, a phone charger in the outlet.

When a battery boost is the right call

If the symptoms point to the battery, a boost is the fastest fix. Cold snaps, short trips and batteries older than three years are the usual culprits in the GTA. After the boost, drive for at least 20 minutes so the alternator can recharge the battery, and have it tested at a parts store soon.

When you need a tow instead

If a boost does not start the car, if warning lights for oil pressure or temperature come on, or if you smell burning, do not keep trying. A tow to a mechanic avoids turning a small repair into a big one.
